Astron Wreck
Astron Wreck is a shipwreck that was named before Esmeralda. The ship was a Russian cargo 127 meters long (417 feet) and 27990 tons. It was built in France, Saint-Nazare by Chantiers de l’Atlantique during 1957. It’s end was in 7th of April 1978, when it was caught in a storm near Punta Cana, while carrying 60 tons of Corn to Cuba.
There is no hurricane or tropical storm listed during this date, so one could conclude that the ship either hit a mine, was torpedoed, or intentionally scuttled, evidenced by the extensive ripped steel of the lower hull.
She broke into two distinct sections with the bow above the water and the stern underwater, with 7,330 barrels of bunker fuel reported lost in the incident. The wreck is in water 12 meters (40 feet) deep.
